A petition to revoke Article 50 and remain in the European Union has reached 5.5 million signatories. This is, on record (i believe) the largest number of signatures a parliament petition has received in history. So the question is, Should Article 50 be revoked? My initial thought is not at this stage.
The reason I have come to this initial thought is that it is a very big move. There are other avenues and directions to take before we come to this conclusion. For example, 1 million people on Saturday took to the streets of Central London to march and campaign for a People’s Vote and Second Referendum. Would this be a more logical root to take before thinking of revocation of Article 50. Would it be easier to have a Confirmatory Referendum etc.?
However I agree with some points when people are calling for a Revocation of Article 50. People have signed this petition for a number of different reasons, some because of the Leadership and premiership of Theresa May and the Conservative Party, as they believe that she is not the right person to lead the United Kingdom throughout Brexit, and I now, more than ever believe with this point. I believe that the statement that Theresa May delivered on Downing Street last week was frankly pointless and that she tried to shift the blame onto other MPs for voting against her deal, when they had certainly valid points for doing so.
Some are calling for Revocation of Article 50 as they believe that Brexit is chaos. They believe it is not the will of the people, and that is it really worth it anymore? We have now been in this mess for 3 years, and frankly nothing has changed. Where have we got? Pretty much no where, we haven’t made proper foundations, we haven’t even got a secure deal.
Revocation of Article 50 is certainly an option we need to face. However I believe that a lot of thought will need to go into this because it is a big, big measure. It is not temporary, it is indefinite. Maybe a longer extension is what we need? Maybe we should have a proper vote? I honestly have got to a standstill in my brain, I do not know anymore.
So to be honest, I haven’t come to a definite conclusion in this blog post. I personally did sign this petition, as I do believe there are valid points for Revocation, however I am unsure whether it is necessary at this stage.
